Mixed martial arts fighter Cole Young has agreed to lose for money on more than one occasion. He is unaware of his heritage and why Emperor Shang Tsung of the Outer World sends the powerful cryomancer Sab-Ziro on the hunt for Cole. Yang fears for his family's safety, and Special Forces Major Jax, who possesses the same dragon-shaped mark as Cole, advises him to go in search of Sonja Blade. Soon Cole, Sonya and the mercenary Kano find themselves in the temple of Lord Raiden, the Elder God and protector of the Earth Kingdom, who gives sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here the new arrivals train with experienced warriors Liu Kang and Kun Lao, preparing to face enemies from the Outer World, and to do so they must unlock the arcana, a powerful force of the soul.
