2012. Howard Ratner owns a small jewelry store in New York. Being a big NBA fan, he can't imagine his life without betting on games, so he is up to his neck in debt and constantly hiding from creditors. One day a friend of his brings Kevin Garnett, the leading player of the Boston Celtics, to his store, and at the same time a parcel with rare black opals arrives from Ethiopia. Mesmerized by their brilliance, Garnett is literally glued to this piece of rock, asks to borrow it for a few days and leaves his championship ring as collateral. Howard immediately pawns the ring at a nearby pawn shop and uses the proceeds to bet on a Celtics game.
