In the spring of 1922, in an era of decaying morals, glittering jazz, and "smuggled liquor kings," Nick Carraway comes from the Midwest to New York City. Pursuing his own American dream, he settles in next door to the mysterious, partying millionaire Jay Gatsby, while across the bay his cousin Daisy and her husband, the hustler and aristocrat, Tom Buchanan, live across the bay.
